Natcoms gives ultimatum on compensation

Abuja - The National Association of Telecom Subscriber (NATCOMS) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to mobile network services operators to respond to the N5 000 (US$30) compensation it wants the operators pay each subscriber for poor services over the years.

The ultimatum comes three weeks after the association petitioned the Ministry of Communication Technology and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) on the alleged excessive exploitation of subscribers over the years by the telecoms service providers.

The association demanded the two government agencies to compel all telecoms companies in the country to pay every subscriber the N5 000 for substandard service.

The National President of NATCOMS, Deolu Ogunbanjo, expressed concern that no action had been taken by both government agencies and warned that after 21 days, the association would resort to other means he could not disclose to get justice for Nigerian subscribers.

“We are yet to hear from the ICT Ministry, NCC or even from the telecoms operator. We are giving them a 21 days ultimatum. If we don't see any action from them, we will resort to other ways to get justice," he said.

Ogunbanjo urged the country’s telecommunication firms to follow the example set by MTN in Ghana when it recently offered to compensate subscribers for drop call experience on its network.
