A video showing a
French police officer beating a black woman with a baton and spraying
tear gas directly into her face has drawn anger across the country.
The eight-minute amateur video, which was posted on YouTube on Sunday under the heading "Shame on French police", was filmed from the upper storey of a building in the central city of Tours.
The clip, which was viewed nearly 700,000 times on YouTube, shows the officer attacking the female driver of a car and beating her with his baton several times in the body and once fully in the face.
He then sprayed tear gas directly into the woman’s face. The officer also sprays tear gas into the face of another female passenger who comes to defend the driver.
Police say the woman was drunk at the time of driving.
French Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Tuesday that prosecutors in the city of Tours had ordered police officials to launch an investigation into the case.
"We need the whole truth and full transparency... The police must be irreproachable,” Valls added.
He condemned the title given to the video but emphasized that there is no room for violence in the police.
