Police in Papua New Guinea say villagers have killed an infamous cult
leader known as Black Jesus, who had been on the run after breaking out
of prison.
Steven Tari, known as Black Jesus, escaped from the Beon jail in Madang province during a mass breakout in March.
He had been serving a 20-year sentence after being found guilty of raping four teenage girls.
Police say Tari was killed by people in Gal, a remote village in Madang province, yesterday.
Chief Inspector Sylvester Kalaut told the Journalists that he was killed
after he murdered a local woman and investigators and a doctor are
hiking to the village today.
At its peak Tari's personality cult had thousands of followers.
He preached that young girls were to be married to him because it was God's prophecy.
