LUPITA Nyong’o, The 31-year-old
actress who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in 12 Years a
Slave, tops the People magazine’s list, announced Wednesday.
Commenting on being selected for
this year’s cover, Nyong’o says: “It was exciting and just a major, major
compliment. I was happy for all the girls who would see me on it and feel a
little more seen.”
The humble yet powerful sentiment
seems to be a constant when it comes to the 31-year-old, whose speeches have
become as much an inspiration as they are gracious thanks. At the Academy
Awards, she wrapped her speech up with the memorable, “I look down at this
golden statue, and may it remind me and every little child that no matter where
you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
Touted for her beauty, style and
grace, Lupita Nyong’o tells People she became aware of her allure only as a
teen. “I was 16 and in Mexico in a small town and by far one of the only black
people in the town,” she says.
“I was in the town square and it was
market day…and a friend of mine walked up to me with a friend of hers, who was
a photographer. He was marveled by me and asked me whether he could take my
picture. It was the first time I had ever done a photo shoot and the first time
anyone had ever expressed an interest to capture my image, and I felt extremely
beautiful.”
