WWE faced many ups and downs in 2015, but one aspect that never suffered was the in-ring work. WWE delivered quality matches each week, and the biggest stars in the company helped create many moments that will be talked about for years to come.
John Cena was probably the company’s top performer over the last 12 months, and he was involved in a few classic matches. Brock Lesnar only wrestled five times in 2015, but they were some of the best matches this year.
Below is a look at the five best WWE matches of 2015.
*Honorable Mention* Sasha Banks vs. Bayley: NXT Women’s Championship Match (NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn)
The list only includes matches that occurred on the main roster, but Sasha and Bayley have to be mentioned when discussing the best matches of 2015. Their match at Barclays Center in August might have been the match of the year, as they managed to somehow steal the show from the main event between Kevin Owens and Finn Balor.
5) Seth Rollins vs. John Cena: United States Championship Match (Monday Night Raw, July 27)
Rollins and Cena had several big matches on WWE TV, and they seemed to get better and better each time. One of their most notable matches came on "Raw,” when Rollins broke Cena’s nose with a knee to the face. But all the blood didn’t deter Cena, who kept fighting and forced Rollins to tap to the STF.
4) John Cena vs. Kevin Owens (Elimination Chamber)
In his first match on the main roster, Owens showed that he would be a major player in WWE for the rest of 2015. The NXT Champion defeated Cena clean, using two Pop-up Powerbombs to beat the United States Champion. Cena and Owens would go on to have two more compelling matches, but none of them topped the first.
3) Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker (Hell in a Cell)
After Lesnar and The Undertaker had an underwhelming match at WrestleMania 30, the two superstars made up for it by putting on two tremendous matches in 2015. Their match at SummerSlam 2015 had an unsatisfactory finish, but that wasn’t the case at Hell in a Cell. It was the most brutal match of the year, as both men left the ring bloodied in what was a true war. Lesnar got the victory, but The Undertaker looked almost as strong.
2) Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns: WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match (WrestleMania 31)
The match was terrific from start to finish. Lesnar dominated Reigns in the early going and introduced “Supplex City” into the WWE lexicon. Reigns managed to battle his way back into the match, bloodying Lesnar and leaving fans wondering who would win the title. With both wrestlers hurting, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and won the title, giving WWE potentially the best finish to any WrestleMania in history.
1) Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena vs. Seth Rollins: Triple Threat WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match (Royal Rumble)
The first WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match of 2015 was the year's best. Stone Cold Steve Austin called it the best triple threat match he could remember, and few could argue with his assessment. Rollins put Lesnar through the Spanish Announce table with an elbow off the top rope, and the Beast Incarnate survived four Attitude Adjustments to eventually pin Rollins and keep the title.
